IPSCO Achieves ISO 14001 Certification

Canadian Facilities meet International Standard

Regina, Saskatchewan, 29 March 2001, IPSCO (NYSE/TSE:IPS) announced today that its Canadian operating facilities have successfully achieved ISO 14001 certification of its environmental management system (EMS). IPSCO is the first multi-site steel manufacturing company in Canada to achieve this international recognition.

“Accreditation of our existing EMS affirms IPSCO’s commitment to due diligence and effective environmental management,” said David Sutherland, IPSCO Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “As a major recycler, certification of the EMS was a good fit and in keeping with IPSCO’s culture which encourages continual improvement and the establishment of environmental objectives,” Sutherland noted. “We believe this certification clearly illustrates our determination to maintain environmental compliance and minimize environmental impacts. This enhances the continuing viability of our operating facilities which is of importance both to the company and its customers.”

IPSCO’s EMS facilitates environmental performance and will ensure environmental compliance is approached consistently at all of its operating facilities. IPSCO embarked upon this process in the summer of 1999 and has devoted much time and energy to meeting the standards set out by the International Organization for Standardization. Official recognition was granted after IPSCO successfully completed extensive third-party audits at each of its (eight) Canadian facilities.

This news release contains forward looking information with respect to IPSCO’s operations and beliefs. Actual results may differ from these forward looking statements due to numerous factors including changing environmental regulations. These and other factors are outlined in IPSCO’s regulatory filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including those on IPSCO’s Annual Report for 2000, its MD&A and Form 40-F.
