QB1 Casing

Dimensions and Make-up Specifications
IPSCO's continuous drive to provide high quality, cost effective products to the oil and gas industry has resulted in the introduction of the QB1 connection.

The QB1 was developed to meet the industry's need for a cost effective casing connection with enhanced mechanical and sealing properties. Specifically, the QB1 fills the gap, both in price and performance, between the 'premium' connections used in severe service environments and the API 8 Round and Buttress connections normally specified for conventional applications.

With the addition of the QB1 to its product line, IPSCO has the flexibility to provide a single source casing and connection solution to a wide variety of oilfield applications. The QB1 is available with IPSCO's API grades H-40, J-55 and L-80, as well as proprietary grades IK-55, IK-70, I-80 and Modified L-80.

The QB1 shares many technical features with IPSCO's field proven QB2 premium connection. The QB1 utilizes hook threads that are fast running and have roots and crests that are parallel to the pipe axis for ease of make up. The hook threads maintain coupling and pin integrity giving high tensile resistance, in fact third party testing has shown that the tensile strength of the connection exceeds that of the pipe body itself.

Steep stabbing flanks and the nose-to-nose seal give the QB1 connection high compressive resistance, making it well suited for many Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) applications where the casing string is exposed to thermal expansion stresses and bending loads.

The nose-to-nose seal previously mentioned provides enhanced sealing properties. The high make-up torque specified for the QB1 ensures a strong interference fit, and makes the two pin noses difficult to separate. Thermal cycling leak tests have shown superior leak resistance for the QB1 when placed in compression, and when exposed to bending loads the QB1 maintained its tight seal with a bend radius of 45 0 /100 feet.

The QB1's strength in compression, tension and bending, as well as its sealing properties make it well suited for many SAGD, casing drilling and horizontal well applications. The QB1 can also provide solutions to problems associated with rotating casing while cementing, low temperature applications, and wells requiring high tensile or compressive resistance.
